The Interstim neurostimulator is a tiny device that is surgically inserted under the skin, usually above the buttocks. A thin wire sends mild electrical pulses to the nerves at the back that controls bowel, rectum and bladder.

The neurostimulator works by stimulating sacral nerves (S3 or S4), helping to regain control of the pelvic floor including bowel and bladder functions.

This method is often considered as a therapy called Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS).

Interstim Therapy (Interstim is a registered trademark of Medtronic Inc), is a sacral nerve stimulation therapy made by Medtronic. It is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and carries CE Mark Certificate.
